Installment #1: From Showroom Bike to Superbike!

It seems like forever ago when this project started, but that’s simply because there has been so much going on. As a matter of fact the official start date for this racing program was on April 23rd, 2010. So we’re still very new to the game, but in this first installment we’re going to cover what it took to get the S1000RR, fresh off the San Diego BMW showroom floor, from a street bike to a super bike.
After Seth, owner of Locust Storage and major investor in to program, had put the break in miles on the “A” bike it was delivered to Lee’s Cycle Service only two weeks before its first outing at the upcoming CA State Championship round at Buttonwillow Raceway Park. On Monday Jeremy had one test with a mildly prepped S1000RR, thanks to Gary Orr, owner of San Diego BMW Motorcycles, offering his bike as a test mule. This allowed the team to begin the tear down of the new bike with a plan in mind of what had to be done.
The first part, as you may all expect, involved removal of many stock components on the bike. The usual suspects included, but are not limited to;

o Stock body work and stock seat
o Lights (this required special steps however)
o Stock Pegs
o Stock Exhaust
o Emissions equipment
o ABS Pump
o Stock Battery
o Stock Triple Clamps and Handle bar weights
o Stock Suspension
o Stock Chain and Gearing
o Oil Change
o Side stand (custom plug)
o Exhaust Servos
I’m 100% positive there are things that I’m forgetting, but that covers most of the bases. At this point we had ourselves a pretty bare motorcycle, definitely a good opportunity to have a look at what BMW did with the Chassis. What do you think?

Now it was time to put it all back together with the new bits that we had;
o Akrapovic Titanium Exhaust
o Attack Rear Sets (GP Shift Pattern)
o Ohlins 30mm Fork Cartridge Internals
o Ohlins TTX Shock
o Catalyst Bodywork, painted by MC Pro Design
o Attack Triple Clamps
o Speed Cell Lithium Battery Pack
o Power Commander, with Auto Tune Module
o Afam Gearing
o Did Chain 520
o Brembo Master Cylinder
As you can see the transformation is quite stunning. Now this S1000RR is ready for some wins and lap records!
